How to Register .ac.in, .edu.in and .gov.in Domains in India

Introduction

When we are talking about domains in internet  context, domain(also known as domain name) is the location of a website, comprised of maximum sixty three characters, with one character minimum. It is entered after the protocol in the URL, as shown in the following example.

There are two parts to a domain name. Let’s take a example of “Google.com”. The first part is “Google” and is called SLD (Second-Level Domain) and “.com”, which is the TLD(Top-Level Domain). Process of registering Indian domains differs from commercial domains, such as .com.

  • Institution should be centrally recognized or affiliated.
  • UGC or Government should approve the institutions.

To register domains in India, the process is: 

1. Identify a Registrar 

Authorized registrars can register domain names and are specific for each country. In India, ERNET India is the registrar for .edu.in, .ac.in and .gov.in domains.

2. Check Availability 

It is important to check the availability of the domain you are going to register.

3. Submit Your Application 

Once you find a domain name that is available, you need to submit a application that normally requires information’s such as, institution name, accreditations and contact information. 

4. Provide Documentation 

Once you submit your application, you will be asked to provide rightful documents which verify the authenticity of the information you provided in your application.

5. Wait for Approval

Your application will be scrutinized by relevant authorities and it can take several days to get approval.

6. Registration Fee

Once you receive approval, payment of registration fee is necessary to complete the final procedure.
